我的留学故事开启于2011年,16岁的我第一次踏上了大洋彼岸的美国。留学美国七年间先后就读于惠顿高中、伊利诺伊大学厄班纳-香槟分校。就读高中时入选全美优秀学生社团(National Honor Society)。以优异成绩两年半完成大学学业,并受到学校嘉奖,入选优秀毕业生行列。就读期间多次获得院长奖(Dean's List)、全州优秀学生(Outstanding Illini)、和美国总统奖(President Award)。


My story of studying abroad began in 2011. At the age of 16, my family and I decided to start a new journey, studying in an American high school. During my seven years of studying and living in the States, I have studied at Wheaton Academy and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I was a member of the National Honor Society during high school time. After finishing my college within two and half years, I was awarded by the school with honored graduates title. In addition, I have also won titles like Dean’s List, Outstanding Illini, and President Award, etc.

现在回忆起我的留学时间,我觉得在美国就读私立高中的经历,带给我了最多的改变,也让我在很长的时间里陷入了身份认同的问题。幸运的是这段经历让我丰富了我的阅历,更是让我明白脚踏实地走自己的路才是对自己,对家庭,对社会最负责任的事情。所以今天我想在这里给大家分享我留学过程中和回国工作后的一些经历,一起讨论多元文化背景下的身份认同问题,探寻更适合新时代个人发展的道路。


Looking back at my journey in America, I would say that enrolling in an American high school has significant impacts on me. It has expended my understanding of the culture and globalization. Meanwhile, I had struggles with identity issues for a long time because of that. Fortunately, this experience has enlightened my life and inspired me on how to be a responsible person. I believe that to keep your personalities and culture while adapting the global culture and start to write your own journey.

在美国的私立高中,我接受了系统的美国教育,从而明白了美国文化的由来和发展过程。渐渐地开始理解为什么美国人会形成美国式思维的原因,为什么会对来自东方的很多事物不解等等。从历史、宗教、法律、文化和社会等方方面面开始了解、熟悉美国,让我更能够适应和融入当地的文化。更是让我明白了跨文化适应课程的重要性。


In American private high school, I received systematic American education, thus I have started to build more understanding on the origin and development process of the American culture. Gradually I began to understand why Americans formed the American thinking and why Americans could not understand many things from the East and so on. From the aspects of history, religion, law, culture and society, I have built deeper understanding about the United States, which helped me adapt and integrate into the local culture. Moreover, I started to realize the importance of cross-cultural adaptation courses.

在这样的成长背景下,我大学期间的朋友基本都是亚裔的美国人和其他的美国人,这倒不是有意而为,而是这时的我比起和高中毕业后才到美读书的同胞,在性格和文化上,与当地人更加亲近。这样的社交圈,让我的语言能力有了非常棒的提升,但是却渐渐加深了我在身份认同上的疑惑:在美国人中,我永远是最异域的那一个;同理,在中国人中,我也会时常显得过于“美国化”。


Growing up with the background, my friends in college were mostly Asian Americans and other Americans. It was not done intentionally, but I was closer to the local people in personality and cultural behaviors than my compatriots who came to the United States after graduating from high school. In such a social circle, it had greatly improved my language ability, but it also had gradually deepened my doubts about identity: I was always the “FOB” one among my Americans; similarly, among Chinese friends, I often seemed to be too American.

幸运的是,伴随着我的成长,与社交圈的扩展,我找回了自己的身份:海归。我们每一个人都因为自己的成长经历,书写着专属于自己的故事。在自己的故事中没有必要纠结于某些标签,而遗忘了自己的文化和性格。在与外国人的更多的交流中,我更是明白了自己的定位。在西方教育背景下成长起来的我,可以运用我的语言能力和思维方式,更好地与大家沟通;而从中国家庭里生长的我,可以让身边的外国朋友更好的理解和体会中国文化。


Fortunately, with my expansion of social circle, I found my identity: the“Returning Turtles”. Each of us is writing a story that belongs to ourselves because of our growing up experiences. There is no need to tangle in some labels thus forget their own culture and character. With more communications and exchanges with foreigners, I developed a deeper understanding of my own position. Growing up with the background of western education, I can use my language ability and thinking methods to better communicate with people; and growing up in my Chinese family, I can help foreign friends around me to better understand and experience Chinese culture.




自此,我心中便萌发了一个有关教育的梦想,我希望能够通过自己的微薄之力让更多的中国学生语言自信、能力自信、文化自信地站在国际的舞台上与各个国家的优秀人才交流沟通,能够真正的融入21世纪全球化的世界,甚至于引领未来世界的走向。所以毕业后我决定去培训机构担任幼年教育英语老师。


Since then, a dream about education has sprouted in my heart. I hope that I can inspire more Chinese students to stand on the international stage with confidences of their language ability, skills, and culture, so that they can communicate with outstanding talents from various countries, and truly integrate into the globalized world in the 21st century, maybe even lead the future world. So after graduation, I decided to go to a training institution and start my career as an English teacher for preschool education.

同时,在2018年10月份,我有幸代表“山己人思”项目团队参加大学生创业世界杯中国赛区的决赛,并获得金奖。我们的项目正是一个结合中西方传统首饰工艺,将云南特有的少数民族记忆符号和文化特征重新设计和打造加工,带回到我们的日常生活中。

During the same time, in October 2018, on behalf of Dianchi College of Yunnan University, I was honored to participate in the finals of the Start-ups World Cup for college students in China and won the gold medal. Our project formally combines the traditional Chinese and Western jewelry crafts, redesigns and processes the unique memory symbols and cultural characteristics of Yunnan ethnic minorities, and brings them back to our daily life.

在丹麦参加世界杯大赛的时候,与各国友人的交流更是坚定了我的目标,不仅仅要让更多的学生学好英文,更是要让更多的人了解云南的文化,中国的文化。让云南走向世界,让世界了解云南。


When I participated in the world cup in Denmark, the communication with friends from different countries strengthened my dream: I shall not only aim to inspire more students to learn English well, but also to be a part in the process of letting the world discover the ethnic minority culture of Yunnan and Chinese Culture and letting the ethnic minority culture of Yunnan and Chinese Culture reach out go the world.

回国后,我接受了云南电视台《我为云南添光彩》栏目的采访。我渐渐地意识到,教授英语只能在很小的范围内影响着自己的学生。为了实现自己的梦想,我应该到一个更大的平台上去贡献自己的力量。


After returning to China, I got an interview from Yunnan TV station and was broadcast as "I made Yunnan proud". I gradually realized that teaching English can only affect my students in a very small range. To achieve my dream, I should go to a bigger platform to contribute my strength.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. I believe that success is yet to come if we keep ourselves and write our own journey. The multicultural world is full of all kinds of charms. I believe that when our teachers and students have received a complete cross-cultural adaptation course educationand had some overseas exchange and learning experience during their study, our teachers and students will be able to stand on the world stage confidently and spread the Chinese culture.
